Day 1
The UK Linedancer Awards for 1998 in Blackpool, England was a fantastic weekend party with many "who's who" from the line dance world. Dancers, choreographers, instructors, artists, musicians, and DJs from all parts of the world came together for this special event held in February. Glass Boot trophies were awarded to those that were voted the top in their field for 1998 by the dance community.

I arrived in Blackpool on Thursday (February 25, 1999) after a long flight. I had a chance to take a "kip" (nap) and enjoy a walk on the beach before things started gearing up. As people starting arriving, the Norbreck Castle Hotel, which by the way does look a bit like a castle, started buzzing. There was dancing everywhere, even in the hallways, in the dining room, and in the swimming pool!

Workshops started on Friday and were taught by:

  • Peter Metelnick (Canada)
  • Chris Hodgson (England)
  • Helen O'Malley (Ireland)
  • Rob Fowler (England)
  • Bill Bader (Canada)
  • Max Perry (USA)
  • Pedro Machado (USA)
  • Maggie Gallagher (England)
  • John Robinson (USA)
  • Barry Durand (USA)
  • Steve and Yvonne Dunn (England)
  • and myself

As part of one of my workshops, I taught Por Ti Sere and Ronnie Beard was there to perform it live. We were about half way through the song when the CD player went totally dead! Ronnie just continued singing without the music while we danced to just his voice and the gentle shuffling of the feet on the floor. The effect was so cool that we all had chills!
